WebRobert Maynard Hutchins was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Jan. 17, 1899. His father was a Presbyterian clergyman who later became president of Berea College in Kentucky. Hutchins attended Oberlin College in Ohio before going overseas to serve in military ambulance services during World War I. After the war he attended Yale University. After leaving his position at the University, Hutchins became an officer of the Ford Foundation. Due to the rapid growth of the US automotive industry in the early 1950s, the Ford Foundation was running such large surpluses that it attracted unwanted attention from the Internal Revenue Service.
